Red Sunset Dreams is the follow-up to Mark Peters' hugely acclaimed debut Innerland, it features a number of guest musicians, including former One Dove singer and songwriter Dot Allison and pedal steel legend BJ Cole. Like its predecessor, Red Sunset Dreams is an album about an imaginary landscape. Whereas Innerland was an introspective psychogeographic trip inspired by Mark’s move back to his hometown of Wigan and the memories it stirred up, Red Sunset Dreams looks outwards, across the Atlantic to the United States of America, but very much through a UK prism; a representation of the subconscious Americana that’s buried deep in...

Bella Union, Further Listening, Island of Noise, Jack Cooper, Modern Nature, playlist, South Records, Southend, Ultimate Painting -

We're big fans of Modern Nature here, their debut, How To Live, was our 2019 album of the year and we had the great pleasure of them playing our Christmas party too. This new album, the follow up to last year's Annual, is another step up. A beguiling, free-flowing, career highlight, which takes in some of British free music luminaries such as saxophonist Evan Parker, pianist Alexander Hawkins, bassist John Edwards and violinist Alison Cotton, as well as long term collaborators Jeff Tobias and Jim Wallis. Island Of Noise is available as a limited boxset, which features an expanded instrumental version of...

April Magazine, our latest San Francisco crush, just released their new album, If The Ceiling Were A Kite Vol.1, on Tough Love. As it's our album of the week/month/year we asked them to put together a Further Listening playlist and asked them a couple of questions giving those of us thousands of miles away an insight in to how it all started. Peter and I (Kati) shared a bedroom door – he'd record all night and...

2021, Cindy, Dinked Edition, Further Listening, Playlist, Tough Love -

San Francisco has been turning up a lot of our favourite bands these past few years, with the SF labels Mt St Mtn and Paisley Shirt, along with Tough Love in the UK, bringing most of them to our attention. Cindy's third record, 1:2, has been on heavy rotation here for months and has finally seen release this week (as a Dinked Edition, or on blue vinyl).  BUY: Cindy - 1:2 To follow up the Further Listening playlist Cindy's Karina Gill made us for her other band Flowertown, we have another here. As usual (these San Francisco bands all seem to have...

To go alongside their future classic debut record (out this week on Mt.St.Mtn) we asked Flowertown to make us a Further Listening playlist, and they've put together a real beaut, focussing on their friends in and around the great Paisley Shirt label. We were instantly smitten when introduced to Cindy by Stephen at Tough Love, with nods to the best bits of all the best bands. Flowertown - which is Cindy's Karina, with Mike from Tony Jay - continue in that same vein. Glenn Donaldson from Freeform Freakout/The Reds, Pinks & Purples puts it best: “…Flowertown is indebted to the great...
